SOHOLAYERS, important new textile and ceramic work by Hella JongeriusMay 20 - July 16, 2006, party May 20, 7-9pmMoss, 146 Greene Street, NYCMoss Gallery will present a new collection of specially commissioned work by Dutch artist/designer Hella Jongerius. The exhibition focuses on a new, extraordinary and complicated textile, called "Layers", which Ms. Jongerius has been developing over the past two years with the noted American textile firm, Maharam. Incorporating many layers of various felts and woolens, laser-cut and then top-stitched together in a remarkable quilt-like fashion, these textiles, including a large number of one-off prototypes presented in numerous variations, will be applied to various furniture pieces created by Ms. Jongerius as prototype 'furniture sketches', and will include special hand embroidery. Exploring further this idea of layering materials, Ms. Jongerius is creating a number of unique studio ceramic pieces, which will extend her textile concept into another medium. icing or cake? wear your couch, hosted by the apartment loves fabricaMay 20-23, Party May 20th 4-6pm, 2006The Apartment 101 Crosby St, NYCA storefront installation and socially interactive experience designed and created by Bethany Koby and Selwa Sweidan with Fabrica, the Benetton communications research center in Treviso, Italy. This installation is titled the "Icing or Cake? Wear Your Couch" and will be created in the two storefront windows of The Apartment on Crosby Street, in the heart of Soho. Wearable pieces will be produced and distributed during the installation at The Apartment. This is a simple and fun critique questioning the value of objects, as well as over-production and consumption. The installation deconstructs (literally) the lust for objects. The inseparable concepts of decoration versus function are highlighted, exposing the banality of objects. How "Green" Is Green Design Furniture?

We are often asked "Just how 'green' is Green Design Furniture?" Green manufacturing to us means creating designs that endure - structurally and artistically - to last for generations, without harming either the environment or the people that make or use them. Our work is done using domestically grown solid wood, logged following sustainable forestry guidelines. Whenever possible, our manufacturing waste products are recycled or repurposed. Learn more about how Green is More Than Just a Name

Where Tradition Meets Progress

Inventor and designer Douglas Green established Green Design Furniture in 1993 to explore pioneering approaches to modern furniture design and production. His long-term vision is guided by the belief that honorable design must have an intelligent premise and superior craftsmanship, while leaving a minimal environmental footprint. Our furniture is handcrafted of sustainably harvested American black cherry in our Portland, Maine, workshop by master woodworkers. We continue to faithfully produce and market the unique and novel product Doug first envisioned- authentic contemporary furniture that is as much fine art as collectible heirlooms. Refinishing Rattan Chairs

Have four of these which are in good condition (sturdy), but a few of the rattan weavings have come loose. Also the bamboo frame has some stains. I don't want to go crazy working on these chairs, but wondered if some hot-glue would repair the few unraveled rattan, and should I paint them or just try to sand off the stains? Maybe a coat of Poly?? I would make some pretty cushions for the chairs if I can 'clean-up' the chairs.
They are around 30-40 yrs old.
Thanks, Jane

This just in from guest contributor Kristin Michel-
“Hey Joe –
What do you make of this furniture? I was in Maine visiting my in-laws and just had to stop and take a picture for you. Believe it or not, the chairs are much more comfortable than they look!
